Neo-slave narrative in the work of Jesmyn Ward

Abstract. The aim of this research is to determine the artistic features of the functioning of the neo-slave narrative genre in Jesmyn Ward’s novel “Let Us Descend”. The scientific originality of the research lies in describing the literary elements of the neo-slave narrative in Ward’s novel, specifically in determining how the writer modernizes this genre model. The study proved that the primary genre model in this novel is the neo-slave narrative, a genre relevant to contemporary African American literature. On the one hand, the novel is built upon traditional aspects of the slave narrative genre, such as first-person narration, chronological sequence of the narrative, mundane descriptions of horrific living conditions under slavery, and the topoi of escape, loneliness, and the attainment of freedom. On the other hand, Ward imbues the novel with new literary forms, specifically through the use of documented facts, intertextuality, the symbolism of natural elements, and fantastic elements. This novel enriches the neo-slave narrative genre model through a female narrative, focusing attention on the history of slavery and the racial and gender discrimination faced by Black enslaved women.
