Semantic features and pragmatic functions of the word “содружество” (commonwealth/community) in discursive models of the modern multicultural space

Abstract.
The study aims to establish the nature of the semantic shift and identify the pragmatic functions of the lexeme “содружество” (commonwealth/community) within discursive socio- and linguocultural models of the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries. This article, based on linguistic material extracted from the Russian National Corpus, lexicographical data, and texts from central and regional media outlets, reveals the semantic specificity, establishes the pragmatic functions of the lexeme “содружество” in the modern multicultural space, and defines discursive models involving this word during a specific historical period. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the comprehensive description of the semantic and functional features of the lexeme “содружество” as manifested in the modern multicultural space. The study holds theoretical significance for lexical semantics, functional linguistics, cognitive linguistics, linguoculturology, linguopragmatics, and discursive analyses, as well as for understanding the meaning of a specific lexeme in the modern multicultural space. As a result of the study, the semantic structure of the lexeme “содружество” is described; it is determined that this structure is hierarchical and depends on the qualitative-characterizing meanings it expresses united by the archiseme ‘friendship’ (namely, an abstract-emotional meaning containing the seme ‘unity’; a cultural-professional meaning containing the seme ‘association’; and an institutional-political meaning containing the seme ‘alliance’). It is established that the lexeme “содружество” has currently become a key linguistic marker of the modern multicultural space, registering a shift from an emotionally-abstract meaning to an institutional-political one, an implicator that retains the core semantic connotations of ‘voluntariness’ and ‘equality’. Pragmatic functions are identified; and considering the evolution of the lexeme’s meanings, the discursive models used in the 1990s and the first quarter of the 21st century are described.
