Abstract.
The article examines silence as an expressive device in cinematography and its artistic counterparts in Kazuo Ishiguro’s narrative poetics. The aim of the study is to identify how the techniques of minimal sound design or its absence, pauses, and silence in film relate to the techniques of “non-action” and reticence in Ishiguro’s literature, creating a shared perceptual space for the viewer and reader. The scientific novelty of the research consists in drawing a parallel between “non-action” in Ishiguro’s prose and silence in film sound design – these techniques perform the same functions: conveying the character’s inner state and heightening emotional tension. The research results demonstrated that, as in cinema, in Ishiguro’s prose, silence is not an absence but a form of presence: it becomes a medium for the inner voice, a way of expressing psychological depth and emotional tension. It is shown that the compositional function of silence in film and “non-action” in literature serves a common purpose – to engage the viewer and reader in the space of the unsaid, where meaning emerges from silence. It is established that silence in cinema and “non-action” in prose act as a form of presence for the character’s inner voice and a tool for conveying complex psychological states.
