Intertextuality in the novel “Psalm” by F. Gorenstein

Abstract.
This article examines the key plot and thematic features of F. Gorenstein’s novel, which continues the religious tradition of Russian prose. The aim of the study is to identify the artistic uniqueness of the novel “Psalm”. The scientific originality consists in a comprehensive analysis of F. Gorenstein’s novel “Psalm”, with an emphasis on the original synthesis of biblical intertextuality and Hasidic philosophy. As a result, we demonstrate how, through the image of the Anti-Messiah-judge and the concept of “plagues”, the writer polemicizes with the Christian tradition, asserting the primacy of Old Testament ethics of law and justice over the New Testament idea of grace. The research established the following: firstly, the novel presents a vision of the world, vices, and sin from the perspective of three religions: Judaism, Orthodoxy, and Buddhism. Secondly, the novel’s understanding of the New Testament diverges from the canonical one: the author reinterprets the image of Christ and his influence on human culture, thoroughly demonstrating his theory of the “conspiracy of the apostles”, which partially justifies and presents in the best possible light the character of Judas Iscariot, whom Gorenstein describes in “Psalm” as the naive and most conscientious of the apostles, a simpleton who alone repented and voluntarily accepted punishment for the common crime. Thirdly, the writer does not shy away from depicting cruelty and violence, revealing the dark sides of human nature and raising questions about the limits of moral compromise under a totalitarian regime. Finally, the Jewish theme in the novel is not limited to the historical context but is also imbued with a philosophical understanding of God’s chosenness, the responsibility of the covenant, and the search for identity in a secular world.
