Corpus study of verbal constructions in modern song discourse (based on Taylor Swift’s works)

Abstract. The aim of this study is to establish the patterns of functioning of verbal constructions in Taylor Swift’s song discourse. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the following: 1) for the first time, a comprehensive classification of verbal constructions in T. Swift’s lyrics has been conducted, identifying seven semantic-functional groups (mental activity, emotional state, perception, communication, movement and displacement, action and interaction, change of state), which have not been systematized to this extent in previous studies; 2) for the first time, statistically significant correlations have been established between the frequent mental verbs ‘know’ (Russian: ‘знать’) and ‘think’ (Russian: ‘думать’) and emotionally evaluative vocabulary, revealing the mechanisms of transforming personal experiences into artistic images. The research results demonstrate that the verbal system in T. Swift’s song lyrics constitutes a multi-level structure, in which each of the seven groups performs the function of transforming personal experiences into artistic images. The analysis of co-occurrence of lexical units revealed statistically significant correlations between frequent verbs and emotionally evaluative vocabulary. Verbs of mental activity mark reflection on contradictory situations and a conflict between the rational and the emotional, whereas verbs of emotional state create an effect of narrative intimacy through the actualization of sensory experience.
