The problem of Professor Moriarty’s prototypes in A. Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories

Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the problem of the literary character’s prototypes of A. Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, Professor Moriarty. The purpose of the work is to identify the most probable prototype of the main antagonist of Sherlock Holmes, which corresponds to both the trajectory of his biography, intellectual characteristics, and the scale of his personality. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the systematization of the prototypes of Professor Moriarty previously proposed by researchers, as well as in going beyond the circle of well-known personalities who could serve as direct or indirect prototypes of Professor Moriarty described by researchers of A. Conan Doyle’s works. As a result of this study, it was established that the person who most closely matched Professor Moriarty’s biography and scientific interests was John Dee, a prominent scientific, spiritual, and political figure from the 16th century during the reign of Elizabeth I. John Dee could have influenced the portrayal of Professor Moriarty as a brilliant and formidable opponent of Sherlock Holmes in A. Conan Doyle’s stories. John Dee played a very important positive role in the history of science, politics, and culture of England, and a comparison of his personality and deeds with the literary image and activities of Professor Moriarty using a contrasting method could highlight the dramatic nature of A. Conan Doyle’s stories and the scale of Sherlock Holmes’s personality.
