Some diachronic changes in the sound system of the Dargin languages

Abstract. The main aim of this article is the reconstruction of the most important sound processes that took place in the Dargin languages and dialects (Nakh-Dagestanian language family). The analysis addresses those phonetic phenomena that have not previously been covered in the Darginological literature. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that, for the first time in Dargin studies, sound processes such as vowel narrowing, depharyngealization and delabialization of consonants have been investigated. For the first time it is hypothesized that the older languages and dialects are those whose word-forms feature an auslaut vowel [e]. New material on assimilation and dissimilation of sounds in Dargin dialects is also introduced into scholarly use. As a result of the research, existing cases of diachronic changes were identified and analyzed both in the vocalic system and in the consonantal system, in particular cases of vowel narrowing and lengthening, processes of loss of gemination and pharyngealization in a number of languages and dialects, delabialization of consonants in the central Dargin dialects, phenomena of assimilation and dissimilation of vowels and consonants, as well as cases of devoicing and abruptivization of consonants. It was established that changes in the sound system most often occur in those languages and dialects that are located in the eastern part of the contemporary Dargin-speaking area.
