Definitional pronominal components of German substantive compounds “Ich-” and “Selbst-” in the aspect of contextual connections

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the types of connections between pronominal components of compounds (“Ich-”, “Selbst-”) and other contextual elements. The article examines adjectives used independently or within word-formation constructions, as well as other pronominal components of compounds whose meanings allow for the creation of comparisons or contrasts within the text. Variants of contextual interaction between these components and various contextual elements are characterized. It is shown that synonymous connections are more characteristic of the compound word component “Selbst-”, while antonymous connections are characteristic of both the “Ich-” and “Selbst-” components. Examples of the creation of synonymous and antonymous connections in the immediate textual environment of compounds containing these components are provided, using publications in the humanities – psychology, sociology, and philology. Scientific novelty lies in identifying typical contextual connections for a specific type of word-formation component involved in German word composition. As a result, it has been determined that synonymy is often realized as a connection between a component and a separate word, while antonymy is found in compounds of the same model contrasted based on the meaning of their components. Specific typical pairs exist, such as the compound word component “Selbst-” and the adjective eigen in cases of synonymy, and the pronominal and adjectival components “Selbst-” and “Fremd-” in cases of antonymy.
