The motif of mountain struggle and rivalry in Japanese folk prose

Abstract.
The aim of the research is to identify the specific links between folk narratives about mountains and Japanese ritual and festival culture, drawing on extensive folkloric and mythological material and based on the principles of non-fairytale prose. The scientific novelty lies in the identification of a specific Japanese folkloric cycle concerning the struggle and rivalry between mountains, as well as in a comprehensive approach to its study. This material is being introduced into Russian scientific discourse for the first time. Within the framework of the mountain rivalry motif, various thematic groups are identified, and the connection between folkloric texts, historical events, and the emergence of oronyms (mountain names) is traced. The motif is examined as a complex synthesis of mythological, historical, and religious aspects. Using specific examples, the study demonstrates the link between ancient narratives and the modern ritual culture of the Japanese. As a result, it is noted that the motif – replete with fantastic and demonological elements and portraying mountains as independent and active agents – has had a profound impact on the formation of mountain cults and the performance of rituals and festivals that remain relevant in contemporary Japan and have not lost their mental significance.
