Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify variations and the significance of the motif of love in the third triptych of the Brontë sisters’ book “Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell”. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that “Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell” are studied as the text possessing the inner unity and lyrical motifs as the base of this unity. As a result of the study, the peculiarities of the composition of the book consisting of poetic triptychs are established. The motif of love connected with the themes of life and death, with the motifs of memory, faith and doubt, hope and vocation moves to the forefront in the third triptych. The analysis of the poems “The Wife’s Will”, “Remembrance”, and “Vanitas Vanitatum, Omnia Vanitas” that compose the triptych has revealed the following variations of the studied motif: the matrimonial love in Charlotte’s poem, the “love stronger than death” in Emily’s poem. The analysis of Anne Brontë’s poem in comparison with the previous poems reveals its polemic character and indicates such interpretation of the motif of love in the compositions of elder sisters as the love-vanity. It is established that the variation of the motif of love in Anne’s poem presents the primary principle of the Christian ethics – the “divine love”. It is revealed that the motifs of love and vocation are connected, and this fact indicates the significance of the motif of love in the formation of the book’s lyrical plot.
