Synsemantic word classes in the topological scheme of the German sentence

Abstract. The research aims to identify the relationship between the functional purpose of service words and their position within the topological scheme of a sentence. The scientific novelty lies in revealing the correlation between the functional role of a service word and its syntactic position. The study demonstrates that syntactic position can be considered the fundamental criterion for distinguishing synsemantic word classes. Synsemantic word classes occupying a position in the pre-pre-field function as discourse markers or connectors. The median position between the theme and rheme is designated for service words that mark the presence of illocutionary force within the sentence. Typically, these are modal particles exhibiting multifaceted deictic properties, used to express the speaker’s attitude and appeal to the interlocutor. The pre-field position is intended for those service words that function as links within micro- and macro-texts. Intonation allows for judgments regarding either the weak integration of a service word into the subsequent clause or its disintegration. The syntactic position of a service word within the sentence’s topological scheme is associated with the prototypical properties of its respective word class, the description of which is significant for part-of-speech classification and the differentiation of homonymous variants.
