The dynamics of constructing gender implicatures in the American film text

Abstract.
The study aims to identify the linguistic and pragmatic mechanisms of gender construction in the film text based on American cinema. The article examines three films – “Fight Club” (1999), “Drive” (2011), and “Barbie” (2023) – which represent three stages in the evolution of gender perceptions: from the crisis of masculinity at the end of the 20th century to post-feminist diversity in the 21st century. The conducted analysis shows that gender representation in cinema is closely linked not only to the socio-historical context but also to speech and visual strategies that generate implicatures. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it is the first to identify the transformation of gender perceptions regarding masculinity and femininity based on an analysis of implicatures across films produced at twelve-year intervals. The research results establish that gender in the American film text is constructed predominantly implicitly. Its representation has evolved from patriarchal ideals and attempts to eradicate any form of femininity (“Fight Club”) to the limited independence of female characters and a gradual transformation of masculinity (“Drive”), and finally to the reversal of gender roles (“Barbie”).
