Fairy tale archetypes and their transformation in A. P. Platonov’s novella “The Foundation Pit”

Abstract.
This article analyzes the reinterpretation of fairy tale archetypes in A. P. Platonov’s novella “The Foundation Pit” and their role in shaping the work’s philosophical and critical content. The aim of the study is to identify the artistic mechanism through which Platonov uses fairy tale poetics to deconstruct utopian myth and comprehend the crisis of the era’s collective ideal. The article examines key archetypes and plot models of Russian folk tales – the image of the hero-seeker, the figure of the magical helper, and the motif of the “other kingdom” – which undergo consistent transformation and inversion in the artistic world of “The Foundation Pit”. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the new interpretation of A. P. Platonov’s story “The Foundation Pit”, which reveals the connection between folklore elements and the philosophical subtext of the writer’s works. The results demonstrate that the use of fairy tale archetypes in “The Foundation Pit” is parodic and tragic: traditional folkloric models lose their teleological direction and consoling function, becoming a means of artistically exposing utopian illusions. This transformation of the fairy tale structure allows us to interpret “The Foundation Pit” as a deliberately constructed “anti-fairy tale”, in which the search for truth leads to an existential impasse and the destruction of hope, revealing a profound contradiction between utopian rhetoric and human reality.
