Between East and West: the perception of Vladimir Nabokov’s works in Russian and Chinese cultural spaces

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to identify the features of the reception of Vladimir Nabokov’s creative legacy in the Chinese cultural space. The article explores the specific perception of his works by Chinese readers and researchers and determines the key aspects of the interpretation of his work in the context of the Chinese literary tradition. The research examines the stages of the development of Nabokov studies in China and analyzes the evolution of the reader’s perception of his works. The author demonstrates how different cultural contexts shape unique interpretations of Nabokov’s texts, while also highlighting the universal aspects of his artistic method. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the systematization of data on the Chinese reception of Nabokov, which is influenced by various translation strategies specific to the Chinese context. The study identifies unique features of the formation of the Nabokov canon in China, which differ from the Western European and Russian reception. The article also attempts to determine the specifics of the Chinese perception of Nabokov’s prose, focusing on the universal philosophical aspects of the writer’s work, which contributes to the creation of an interpretative model that differs from traditional approaches. The results obtained allow us to take a fresh look at the mechanisms of intercultural communication in the field of literary perception and expand our understanding of the possibilities of adapting a complex modernist text in a different cultural context. The study found that, despite significant differences in national reading and interpretation traditions, Nabokov’s work demonstrates the ability to transcend cultural boundaries through a combination of formal innovation and the universality of existential themes.
