Features of a publicist functional style in the public correspondence of the New England founding fathers

Abstract.
The object of this study is the emergence of the contemporary English publicist functional style. The research is conducted at the intersection of functional stylistics and history of literature. The research aims to identify the constitutive features of publicist functional style using early colonial Anglo-American texts. The analysis is based on the first of the letters for the pioneers of New Plymouth, known as Mourt’s Relation. The letter, written by an unknown author, arrived in New England on the first ship after the navigation had resumed. In the following year (1622) a collection of the letters was published in England. The chosen text is analysed here from a functional stylistic perspective. Its content and form are examined separately, extralinguistic factors and linguistic expressiveness are also taken into account. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the description of the selected material from a functional stylistics perspective, demonstrating its adherence to publicist functional style. The functional analysis is thus applied to such early material of the American history, which makes it possible to trace the emergence of publicist style of the English language.
