Axiological strategies for character representation in James Patterson and Maxine Paetro’s contemporary American novel “The 24th Hour”

Abstract.
The study aims to identify the axiological strategies for character representation in James Patterson and Maxine Paetro’s contemporary American novel “The 24th Hour”. The article describes the specifics of the authorial portrayal of characters through the use of axiological strategies implemented via various linguistic units at different language levels; it also establishes their role in shaping the value-polarized worldview of the literary text. The scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that, based on Patterson and Paetro’s American detective novel “The 24th Hour”, five interrelated axiological strategies for character representation are identified and systematically described. The concept of the “axiological image of a character” is operationalized in relation to the analysis of mass literature: it is presented as a point of integration for authorial intent, evaluative verbal argumentation, and the core meaning of the work. Furthermore, the toolkit for the linguo-axiological analysis of a character’s image is expanded by comprehensively accounting for the contrast between formal and informal registers, as well as the illocutionary force of speech acts involving threats or warnings. The research establishes that the aggregate of axiological strategies forms a binary axiological structure of the text, which consistently asserts the values of justice, professionalism, and the inevitability of the law, while simultaneously delegitimizing any manifestations of immorality. In turn, the character’s axiological image incorporates the author’s value intention, evaluative speech argumentation, and the work’s ultimate meaning, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for interpreting contemporary English-language prose.
