Donald Barthelme's short story "At the Tolstoy Museum" from the perspective of postmodernist poetics

Abstract. The aim of the research is to identify the specifics of key postmodernist techniques reflected in Donald Barthelme's short story "At the Tolstoy Museum" (1969). The article examines the features of composition (collage, fragmentation) and the techniques for implementing narrative strategy (polyphony, mixing of styles); it analyzes central images (the museum, exhibits, visitors, Leo Tolstoy) and motifs (the motif of exaltation and dethronement, the motif of memory as the preservation of a cultural code, the motif of undermining cultural authorities). Stylistic analysis of the text is also at the center of attention. The scientific novelty of the study represents a systematic consideration of D. Barthelme's short story "At the Tolstoy Museum" in terms of the postmodernist strategies employed within it. The research reveals how the techniques of postmodernist strategy become a way of constructing a playful reality and ironically deconstructing the image of a global cultural authority. The obtained results showed that the story is a montage based on a polyphonic sound and a change in stylistic coloring (which is reflected at the linguistic level); key images (the museum, Leo Tolstoy, exhibits, visitors) undergo defamiliarization and hyperbolization and are created through irony, producing the effect of an inverted perception of the heritage of classical literature. Through these techniques, Barthelme expresses an attitude toward the contemporary creative process as an absurd game with the reader.
