Current trends in gender marking within the professional language of the Bundeswehr (based on media texts and servicewomen’s biographical profiles)

Abstract. The study aims to identify ongoing changes in German-language military discourse from the perspective of its feminization, using military rank titles as a case study. The article investigates the specifics of the German Bundeswehr discourse within the context of the current gender reform. The author analyzes the transformation of women’s roles in the German Armed Forces, as well as the attitudes of both military personnel and German society toward these changes and gender asymmetry. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the systematization and detailed description of feminitives (feminine occupational titles) within Germany’s system of military ranks. For the first time, the paper comprehensively addresses the use of military feminitives in conditions where German military discourse remains insufficiently explored. The research establishes that, within the framework of the Bundeswehr’s gender reform, command positions are primarily subject to feminization. At the same time, official documents retain masculine forms for higher military ranks, decorations, and career positions occupied by women. However, alternative linguistic tools exist that fulfill the role of gender marking for female service personnel. Servicewomen themselves often prefer these alternative forms of address and self-reference in military structures and media in order to prevent alienation from male military personnel and to avoid attracting undue attention.
