Abstract.
The article is devoted to the analysis of S. A. Snegov’s novella “The Thirty-Two Guises of Professor Kren” from the perspective of its artistic originality and its affiliation with the “soft” school of Soviet science fiction, a study necessitated by the need to academically define the work’s place within the author’s creative legacy. The purpose of this research is to examine the distinctive artistic features of S. Snegov’s debut science fiction novella “The Thirty-Two Guises of Professor Kren”. The scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that it establishes, for the first time, the specific features of the novella not only within the context of S. Snegov’s early prose but also within the broader framework of Soviet science fiction. The study concludes that the Soviet science fiction writer, drawing upon the creative experience of M. Shelley and R. L. Stevenson – who explored the problems of creating a new personality and experimenting with individuality – exposes human and social vices through Kren’s “Electronic Creator”, which combines a technical concept with a mechanical embodiment of philosophical ideas. The key themes of the novella are revealed through the devices of absurdity, hyperbole, and the grotesque, which would later become defining features of the writer’s subsequent works, both in his short stories and novels.
