Abstract. The article explores the specifics in the representation of the uncanny as an emotive category by the verb “seem” in three scientific romances by the English writer H. G. Wells. The aim of the research is to identify the typical features in the interaction between emotivity and seemingness categories in the English fictional text. The originality lies in clarifying the role of seemingness modality in the representation of the uncanny feeling in the scientific romances “The Island of Doctor Moreau”, “The Invisible Man”, and “The Time Machine”. It has been ascertained that the verb “seem” is frequently used for describing unsettling liminal objects or situations, centered around key fantastic hypotheses in each scientific romance. The verb “seem” indicates the blurring of the boundaries between the concealed and the evident, the familiar and the unfamiliar, the fictive and the actual, the animalistic and the human in the uncanny images of the hybrid beast folk, the invisible man, and the regressing future worlds. Both seemingness and the uncanny are caused by the epistemic problem in cognizing the object, its estimation as aberration in the actual context that generates the feelings of anxiety, alienation and interest in the observer. It has been clarified that the link between the two analyzed categories lies in sharing three common defining traits - indeterminacy, ambiguity, and subjectivity.
