Abstract.
The study aims to identify the specific features of the artistic world of M. A. Kuzmin’s early novels “The Adventures of Aimé LeBoeuf” and “The Travels of Sir John Fairfax through Turkey and Other Remarkable Countries” by analyzing the functioning of motifs and concepts. The article clarifies the terminological apparatus and provides an overview of critical literature on M. A. Kuzmin’s oeuvre. The study outlines his aesthetic program and addresses the problem concerning the artistic value of the writer’s works defined as “stylization for the sake of stylization”. In the course of the study, traditional motifs (leaving home, wanderings, amorous adventures, peeping, eavesdropping, disguise, and fate) as well as the concepts of “love” and “fate” are identified. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, poetologically inventional and conventional motifs and concepts are utilized as markers of the artistic world in Kuzmin’s novels, which allows for the interpretation of the author’s retrospectivism and reveals the value of his innovation through an analysis of the novels correlated with his aesthetic program. The findings demonstrate that the stylized motifs lack the characterological function of the picaro and generate a pragmatic-functional ambivalence: externally, they fulfill the function of narrative intrigue, while internally, through concepts, they reveal their philosophical essence. The concept of “love” exhibits semantic multifacetedness and discloses Kuzmin’s conception of the human being. The motivic-conceptual unity of “fate” is interpreted through the renunciation of fatalism and providentialism in favor of voluntarism. The nature of dramatic tension is exposed, rooted in the protagonist’s internal conflict between a thirst for adventure and existential emptiness. The initiation motif illustrates the hero’s path toward spiritual maturation. It is proved that the writer’s retrospectivism becomes a mode of conceptualizing reality, reflected in the poetological distinctiveness of the artistic world of Kuzmin’s novels, which embody the author’s aesthetic program and convey his worldview.
