The speech act of condolence in the German language: the speaker’s social role and linguistic variation (based on texts on the death of Laura Dahlmeier)

Abstract. The article analyzes the speech act of condolence in contemporary German from the perspective of speaker pragmatics, drawing on texts published in connection with the tragic death of German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier in 2025. The study aims to identify the correlation between the speaker’s social role, text type, and the choice of linguistic means used to express condolences in German. The research material comprises 143 texts stratified across three author groups: institutional (politicians, sports federations), private-public (family, colleagues, friends), and digital commentators (social media users). The scientific novelty lies in proposing, for the first time on the basis of a single media trigger, a typology of condolence speech strategies that accounts for the correlation among the speaker’s social position (status, closeness to the deceased, communication channel), their intentional stance, and their inventory of linguistic devices. The results demonstrate that institutional authors employ performative formulas, nominalizations, and third-person address, thereby realizing the intention of institutional representation. Private-public authors address the deceased in the second person, using emotive vocabulary and personal reminiscences to realize the intention of solidarity rooted in personal shared experience. Digital commentators, who lack an objective connection to the deceased, construct their entitlement to offer condolences through self-reflection on grieving a stranger, emotional hyperbolization, and emojis, thereby enacting an affiliative intention. The study establishes that the variation of linguistic means of condolence in German is governed not only by the news event itself, but also by the social distance between the speaker and the deceased, as well as by the genre and communicative characteristics of the text.
