The pragmasemantic potential of German phraseological units in the detective novel “Brennende Intelligenz”: a level-based stratification

Abstract.
The purpose of the study is to determine the level-based distribution of German phraseological units in the text of Harald and Lukas Burger’s detective novel “Brennende Intelligenz” (2024), taking into account the realization of their pragmasemantic potential. The scientific originality lies in the fact that, for the first time in domestic German studies, the text of the novel is analyzed using a comprehensive pragmasemantic approach to identify textual and compositional levels where phraseological units are employed within the framework of a “speculation” strategy, given their eurysemantic nature: namely, the protagonist’s self-reflection, the authorial “I”, the investigation, the description of the narrative or characters, and the direct speech of characters. The linguistic ambiguity of German phraseological units is utilized in the detective novel through the diffuseness of their etymological and figurative meanings. As a result of the study, it was established that the identified levels of the detective novel are convergent with one another. It was revealed how, across various compositional levels of the detective text, the intentional remotivization of a phraseological unit, the disclosure of its inner form, the reflection on its component composition, and syntactic parceling manifest the author’s intentions and thoughts through the pragmasemantic potential of these units.
