Abstract. The article deals with the motivation of staff labour activity. The tasks and functions of motivation, the factors influencing labour motivation are considered. The notions "need", "motive", "stimulus", "reward" are defined. Considerable attention is paid to the interconnection of motive and stimulus in motivational mechanism. The conceptions of needs analysis are presented in the paper. The comparison of these theories with Maslow’s hierarchical theory of needs is carried out. Connection between the employee’s efforts and labour result is traced.
