ON THE ISSUE OF THE CORRELATION OF MULTIPLE MEANING AND POLYSEMY

Abstract. The article deals with the main approaches to the definition of the notions "multiple meaning" and "polysemy" in domestic and foreign linguistics. The author reveals the understanding of these linguistic phenomena at various stages of the development of science - from ancient philosophers to modern linguistics. The paper focuses on the main postulates of linguistic studies that form a basis for the interpretation of these phenomena.
