Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the nominative function of contrast by the example of short stories "The Extraordinary Stories from the Life of City Kolokolamsk" by I. Ilf and E. Petrov. The author considers the features of contrast implementation in word combinations and sentences handed down in the strong position of the text: the title of the story, the heroes’ names and so on. The functions of contrast in creating a comic effect, as well as its role in the manifestation of the author’s attitude to the modern reality are indicated.
