Abstract. The article touches upon the aspects of difference of a conceptual metaphor from the metaphor through the lenses of the development of the theory of metaphors. At the turn of the twentieth century the notion "metaphor" fixed firmly in linguistics due to its double nature and ability to create image. With the appearance of cognitive linguistics the specialization of metaphor gets narrow, and the term "conceptual metaphor" as a mental tool of cognition, categorization, explanations and world perception appears to change it.
