Abstract. The article presents an analysis of the basic concept of the novel ""The Idiot" by F. M. Dostoevsky, which contains not only the initial meaning of "a sick, weak-minded person" but also the individual-author’s meaning. The author determines the connection of the concept of "idiot" not only with a system of the novel images, but also with the plot.
