Abstract. The structural-morphological, word-formative and semantic analysis of the common noun йо?ул : 1) "nose"; 2) "beak" in comparison with the words йо?йадир "loon" (literally: "white-billed") and Й??тэгэ - the name of the hilly promontory in the Bolshaya Chukochya River (literally: "Big nose" or "Holy nose") ? shows that they have the same root йо?= which means: 1) "nose"; 2) "beak". The comparative analysis of these words with the other verbal stems with йо?= , in particular йо?нэ= "to be open" and йо?оньэ= "to be evil, angry", allows drawing the conclusion about the direct relation of the ancient root йо?= with the meanings "open" and "evil, angry".
