SPECIFICS OF TOPONYMICAL SPACE IN THE CYCLE OF NOVELS BY GEORGE RAYMOND RICHARD MARTIN "A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE"

Mkrtchyan Tamara Yur'evna
Southern Federal University

Abstract. The article is devoted to studying toponyms in the epical fantasy saga by George Martin "A Song of Ice and Fire" the poorly investigated onomastic space of which is distinguished by special vividness and richness of author’s neologisms and, consequently, is of particular interest for linguistic study. The paper examines the theoretical problems of toponym classification and provides the quantitative and comparative analysis of geographical names in the mentioned work according to object nature. The identified prevalence of oykonyms, hydronyms and horonyms, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the very rare use of dromonyms and drimonyms is associated with one of the typical features of fantasy genre - inclusion of medieval elements into the story.
