Abstract. The purpose of the article is the functional analysis of public speech impact and the revelation of the American identity role in discourse. The functional perspective of economic discourse is formed in two types of speech strategies: aimed at identity as unity and identity as difference from other nations, including enemies. The corresponding speech tactics have been revealed: tactics of positive rhetoric, gratitude, promise, flattery, and tactics of creating the image of an enemy, threats, and declarations of intentions. The analysis has shown that the nonlinearity property of discourse allows speakers to use semantic augments (spontaneously arising during the semantic system development) to achieve their communicative goals.
