INTERPRETATIONS OF DOROTHEA BROOKE’S IMAGE AND THE PROBLEM OF WOMEN’S SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS IN GEORGE ELIOT’S NOVEL "MIDDLEMARCH"

Abstract. The article examines the specificity of artistic interpretation of women’s issues in the novel "Middlemarch". In fact, George Eliot’s works contribute - directly or indirectly - to revaluation of values in favour of the woman’s private sphere and to changing the woman’s role and functions in the society. The author concludes that women’s theme in Eliot’s novel acquires new features in comparison with her predecessors’ works. The paper justifies the thesis that women’s problems (social, spiritual) are transferred into the ethical domain and are reduced to the conception of struggle of egoism and altruism, social and marital duty and personal happiness.
