MODERN RUSSIAN ICON PAINTING IN RESEARCHERS’ ESTIMATIONS

Abstract. The author considers icon role in the modern world, its features, as well as development tendencies in the Russian icon painting, concludes that today the development of icon painting at the turn of the XX th-XXI st centuries has both positive and negative results: the number of low-skilled craftsmen is increasing along with icon painting workshops and artels throughout Russia; and pays attention to one of the most important development tendencies in icon painting today - the creation of new iconographic plots and, as a consequence, the new language of icon.
