POWER IMAGE ORIGIN IN THE TIME OF CHARLES THE GREAT

Abstract. The article is devoted to the issue of the origin of the ruler’s image in the Carolingian era. Analyzing the process of the appearance of the image of the sovereign under Charles the Great’s rule in the Frankish Kingdom the author bases upon a broad range of narrative sources: annals, "deeds" and letters addressed to monarchs. Attention is focused on how this or that source influenced the consolidation in the literature of the "Carolingian Renaissance" of the Christian interpretation of power, which the Frankish intellectuals inherited from the time of the empire of Constantine the Great.
