Abstract. The article analyzes paternalistic relations among indigenous people of the Northern Altai foothills in the XIX-XX centuries. The study is based on a wide range of sources including the author’s field materials, archival data and inventory records. Social paternalism was a set of traditional norms and customs aimed to provide population reproduction and preservation of human life especially valuable under the conditions of the high death rate in the traditional society.
