SURGUT AT THE BEGINNING OF OIL AND GAS DEVELOPMENT OF WESTERN SIBERIA

Abstract. The article describes causes for choosing the village Surgut of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in the late 1950s as the main geological area for oil prospecting taking into account research material about its possible oil-bearing capacity that was gathered in the 1930-1940s. The paper analyzes geographical causes, which drew special attention to Surgut as a resting base for drilling promising areas of the Middle Ob region. The article also reflects ambiguous response of the local authorities to decision about oil exploration works beginning in Surgut district.
