Abstract. The article considers the notion "test" from the point of view of the contradictory attitude of higher school teachers towards it. The author presents criteria for test tasks, the test structure and samples of development of different types of test tasks prepared by the author on the basis of the IELTS format test and aimed at assessing, apart from the knowledge of separate material, general language abilities and skills except for oral speech.
