SEMANTICS OF THE DISGUISED COSTUME: ORIGINS OF THE TRADITION OF DISGUISING AS A BEAR

Submitted: 16.12.2018.
Abstract. The article deals with the functions of disguising as a bear during the Mordovian wedding. The author traces the origins of the disguise tradition in the bear cult of the Middle Volga region peoples, which can be found in the artefacts of the forest zone tribes of the Eneolithic age: flint sculpture images, ornaments and ritual objects made of bone, copper-smelting products. Due to the use of general scientific methods based on the informational-semiotic approach, the semantics of the disguised clothes, determined by the totemic ideas of a person and the religious-magical traditions of the most ancient hunting civilization, is revealed.
Key words and phrases: мордовская свадьба, традиция ряжения, волосовские племена, культ медведя, кремневые фигуры, украшения из клыков медведя, семантика костюма, Mordovian wedding, disguise tradition, Volosovo tribes, bear cult, flint pieces, bear fangs ornaments, costume semantics.
