University Orchestras of China and Their Functions in Socio-Cultural Space

Abstract. The aim of the article is to determine the functions of university orchestras in the socio-cultural space of modern China. The author provides the brief history of university orchestras’ formation from both social and political points of view. The functions of university orchestras such as ethical, aesthetical, educational and socio-political are highlighted and considered. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it examines the modern Chinese musical culture, which dynamics of development is a phenomenon that requires theoretical comprehension. For the first time, the article analyses the functions of university orchestras and attempts to classify the functions, as well as identifies the differences between university orchestras and professional ones. As a result, it has been proved that the task of university orchestras’ activity in the socio-cultural space of modern China is to educate a comprehensive spiritual personality with experience in intercultural communication.
