Abstract.
The article is devoted to the ideological struggle between south and north states on slavery question in the XIX thcentury, which resulted in the Civil War, when about 650 thousand Americans were killed. The principal positions, reasons and arguments of slavery supporters and opponents are considered. The characteristics of the main ideological movements and their leaders are given.
