Abstract.
The article is dedicated to a topical problem - the typology of the modal and melodic forms of the Abkhazians’ funeral ritual. The paper for the first time presents an attempt of the typological analysis of national regional song tradition in this genre. Its investigation provides an opportunity for deeper understanding the Abkhazian folk culture in all its manifestations. The article analyzes “lamentation on mother”, which most clearly represents the modal and rhythmical peculiarities of traditional lamentation. This problem is poorly investigated and requires further research.
