Abstract.
The article analyses the role of the Soviet timber processing complex as one of the main factors of the formation, implementation and transformation of the industrial potential of the Republic of Karelia in the 1940-1980s. The author comes to the conclusion that during the examined period the economy of the region turned into monosectoral one having implemented its industrial potential one-sidedly. By the end of the Soviet period Karelia was mainly oriented towards the active development of the low-tech subsectors of timber processing complex and had fewer prospects for successful development in the conditions of the beginning of market relations than the neighboring regions.
