Abstract. The article focuses attention on the revealing of the contemporary idea about mechanisms, which has a tendency to development in modern western studies and which is called “abstract mechanism”. Differences between the classical term “mechanism” and its more actual version of abstract mechanism are presented. The efficiency of the application of the model of abstract mechanism in relation to the objects of cognition pertaining to the humanities, particularly by the examples of the contract conceptions of T. Hobbes and J. Locke, is shown.
