Abstract. The article deals with the phenomenon of jazz music at the stage of its stylistic rebirth from mass culture into elitist art; gives a panoramic view of two contiguous historic styles of the 1940s - swing and bebop. Through the comparative analysis of their “stylistic portraits” the author reveals the picture of aesthetic, lexical evolution of jazz art exhibiting its mobility and multidimensionality, which actualizes prospects of jazz study through the lenses of historicism.
