“HER MAJESTY’S OPPOSITION”: THE TORY PARTY SEARCHING FOR NEW INSTRUMENTS TO SECURE THE PARTY’S SOLIDARITY IN 1830-1834

Abstract.
The article examines the place of new principles to secure the Tory Party’s solidarity in the process of evolution of Great Britain’s party and political system in the 1830s. Special attention is paid to analyzing the role of the conservative press and evaluating its importance for transformation of the British party and political system into the constitutional mechanism of the modern type. The author examines the activity of conservative clubs (“Charles Street Gang” and “Carlton Club”) and the system of measures they took to encourage the conservative press in the second half of the 1830s. The paper emphasizes F. P. Bonham’s role as one of the key figures in this process.
