Abstract. The article is devoted to Duke Ellington - one of the first jazz geniuses. The paper discovers all dimensions of his creative work, covers the basic aspects of musician’s creative activity. The study contains three chapters each of which provides an analysis of Ellington’s activity as: a) conductor; b) bandleader; c) arranger. The authors identify the basic innovations that Ellington introduced into jazz art and analyze conceptual orientation of his music.
