PLOTINUS IN ALEXANDRIA: THE ORIGINS OF NEOPLATONISM

Abstract.
The article analyzes the life and creative path of one of the founders of Neoplatonism - Plotinus. In this regard, special attention is paid to the work of Plotinus’ pupil - Porphyry, who in his “On the Life of Plotinus” reflected the main stages in the development of his personality through the lenses of the events of Plotinus’ life, which he observed while being among his closest followers. The author comes to the conclusion that Plotinus’ Neoplatonism was based not only on the teachings of Plato himself, but also on the knowledge he received when studying with Ammonius Saccas in Alexandria, that is the system, which was most likely eclectic and intellectually rich, taking into account the nature of education in the Alexandrian society in the I-II centuries AD.
