Paper banknotes of Catherine the Great in Russia: Historiographical aspect

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine how the topic of Catherine the Great’s banknotes is covered in historical science. The paper examines the aspects to which researchers pay most attention: the reasons for the introduction of banknotes, the essence of the new system, its evolution and impact on the country’s economy. It is noted that a significant portion of the works list various historical facts related to the issue of banknotes, but there is no in-depth analysis. However, some works stand out: they consider the issue of banknotes in a more comprehensive way: within the framework of the development of Russia’s financial and monetary system. The scientific novelty lies in a comprehensive assessment of how Catherine the Great’s banknotes are evaluated in historical science. As a result of the study, the author concludes: despite some advantages from the introduction of banknotes (overcoming the state budget deficit, developing the commodity-monetary system), the disadvantages of this system (inflation with constant issue of banknotes) were not overcome either under Catherine the Great or in the first half of the 19th century.
