“Ural Chronicles”: mythological and historical motifs in Dmitry Geller’s animated film “Alyoshenka”

Abstract.
The article analyzes the artistic structure of the animated film “Alyoshenka” (2025) by Dmitry Geller (born 1970), which was awarded the Grand Prix at the 30th Open Russian International Animated Film Festival in Suzdal. The author focuses on the unique features of the director’s work, including the multilayered content, the use of mystical and esoteric motifs, and the integration of cultural and historical elements. The film “Alyoshenka” is part of the “Ural Chronicles” cycle (2020-…), and it combines myths with modern legends, creating a complex narrative rich in symbols. The research aims to identify and analyze the features of the artistic structure of the animated film “Alyoshenka”, revealing its symbolism and connection with the mythological context of Ural culture. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the comprehensive approach to the analysis of the artistic text of the film “Alyoshenka”, which is considered as a complex multilayered phenomenon. The study of the artistic structure of Dmitry Geller’s animated film “Alyoshenka” makes it possible to consider this work as an example of auteur animation, rich in symbolism and metaphor. This allows the viewer not only to perceive the visual aesthetics but also to actively participate in the interpretation of the content layers of the work. The director uses the technique of “image within image”, which makes it possible to focus on the details of the environment, carrying additional meanings and symbols. The characters of the film reveal deep philosophical themes related to memory and associations. Geller avoids a clear storyline, instead focusing on the emotional and associative perception of the viewer. The film “Alyoshenka” demonstrates a high level of professional skill of the director and contributes to the formation of a more complete picture of modern Russian auteur animation.
