Abstract.
This research is dedicated to studying the evolution of secondary female education in the Russian Empire from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. The aim of the study is to characterize the process of formation and operation of diocesan women’s schools as one of the primary models of secondary educational institutions in pre-revolutionary Russia. This investigation represents the first comprehensive analysis of the educational and upbringing work of diocesan women’s schools, considered a unique phenomenon in the history of Russian education during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The study establishes the mechanisms for synthesizing secular and ecclesiastical principles within their educational programs and demonstrates how an expanded curriculum of general education subjects was integrated with traditional spiritual disciplines. The author traces the evolution of the upbringing activities’ objectives, reflecting a shift from preparing students exclusively for family roles to fostering socially responsible and professionally oriented individuals. The paper substantiates a systemic evaluation of diocesan schools’ contribution to the democratization of female education and the expansion of social mobility for low-income segments of the population. The scientific novelty lies in identifying and substantiating the specific features of the synthesis of secular and ecclesiastical principles in the aims, content, methods, and organizational forms of the educational process within diocesan schools. This re-evaluates the traditional perception of diocesan women’s schools as exclusively closed spiritual institutions. A comparative analysis was also conducted between the curricula and programs of diocesan schools and those of women’s gymnasiums under the Ministry of Public Education and the Department of Empress Maria’s Institutions. The research results showed that diocesan schools aimed to achieve a balance between general education and religious-moral upbringing. Graduates of these schools were prepared for a dual social role: an educated mother/wife and a qualified teacher. Throughout their development, diocesan women’s schools underwent evolutionary changes in their educational programs and teaching methodologies, driven by the prevailing legislation of the Russian Empire. These transformations aimed to improve the educational and upbringing process, making it more comprehensive and effective. The significance of diocesan women’s schools for the development of female education in Russia is highly considerable. They democratized access to education by providing opportunities for girls from various social strata, including those from limited-resource families; ensured access to quality education; and fostered the spread of enlightenment among women and the formation of a new model of female identity, based on a harmonious combination of traditional values and modern knowledge.
